How important are graphics to you when playing a MZX game?
Graphics have to be over-the-top, nothing less. [ 2 ]  [4.65%]
Graphics should use at least a few ".chr" files in the game. [ 11 ]  [25.58%]
I can deal with pre-fab graphics, just as long as they're used well. [ 26 ]  [60.47%]
Graphics mean nothing to me! [ 4 ]  [9.30%]

Elig Post Synopsis:
Doesn't anyone understand.
The games are the same without graphics. You're idiots.
The games are the same without graphics. You're shallow idiots. I'm not a shallow idiot.
The games are the same without graphics. Some games are good and don't have good graphics, so this means good graphics don't matter.
One game had good graphics.
The games are the same without graphics. You're idiots.
You think that graphics make games better.
That's absurd.
We use a GCS that's tile based so no good graphics are ever made in it.
This game is the same without graphics. Are you an idiot?
The game didn't have good graphics anyway.
That other one didn't either.
The games are the same without graphics. Level design is all that matters.
Graphics don't matter. Good games don't have graphics. Bad games do have graphics.
If you play a game expecting graphics you're an idiot.
Super Metroid is the same without graphics. Level design is all that matters.
Level design is all that matters. Music doesn't. GFX don't.
Music and graphics don't matter because the GAME matters.
The games are the same without graphics, except they'll sell better and are more shitty.
The games are the same without graphic technology.
The games are the same without graphics. These games had graphics and sucked.
The game is the same without graphics.
Are you an idiot who thinks the game is different without graphics?
NetHack is so great and you're an idiot should you think otherwise.
Exo, you have bad taste in games.
This game is the same without graphics. Graphics did not factor into whether people played it or not.
This game would have been the same without graphics.
Why?
Because of the level design. Also, this game is the same without graphics.
Also it didn't have graphics.
You cannot say that games aren't the same without graphics.
You're saying that graphics are 100% of a game.
Lots of games are shitty because they went for graphics.
Quake is only about what you do, not how it looks and is presented.
Graphics don't matter.
Katamari would have been fine without any graphics. Hell, even a black screen would be OK.
Katamari would have been fine with shitty graphics.
Graphics are easy to make, but they don't matter.
[Grudge.]
Any given game is only good because of gameplay.
Dungeon Master could have been set in something other than a dungeon; graphics don't matter.
Fallout Two was only about story, not graphics.
Mario's graphics sucked and it was good.
You're dumb because you think graphics matter.
If you don't think what I think, you're an idiot.
Later.

edit: to take up less screen

Hey, RyanThunder, I know you made this thread in part due to worries about how your game's looks will be received by us. You really had no reason to worry. Your style is charmingly old-school, in my opinion, and is not a deterrent from playing your game.

Sorry this turned out to be such a mess. The rifle range will resume business in an hour, skeet shoot only. We apologise for the inconvenience.

You know what made Super Metroid good? It sure as shit wasn't the graphics. Those graphics sucked. Super Metroid was about the graphics last. You know the last thing made in Super Metroid? THE GRAPHICS.

Err, excuse me... did you really look at the graphics? Like, for real? Do you have any idea of the amount of professional work that went into those graphics? The amount of work that went into doing all that shading on Samus's sprite? The backdrops? In practice, those graphics don't really stand out nowadays of course, but when you really look at them, you realize that they're actually very well done. This applies a forteriori to most other well known SNES titles (FF6 anyone?). Some have insanely detailed tilesets, and your eye can just go wandering around, looking at the details. The fact that they're just 256 or 16 colors low resolution doesn't take away much from well done graphics. (fun game: look at all the small details in that pic, and what each small detail implies)

Also, remember that a lot of games (especially 2d games) without music are... well, boring. It's like if there was something missing. I wouldn't make a game without music, because it's hard to enjoy well done gameplay if the game is boring because of the lack of music.

Also remember that graphics are important to get the player to identify to the game character. Badly done sprites can do a lot harm to a game, and inversely a likable character can turn a good game into your favorite game. Mario is a great example of this, he's a well designed character (especially since Mario bros 3). A well designed character won't make your crap game into a good game, but it will easily make the player come back to your game (and spawn endless fanboyism and sequels). You can also use text for character identification purposes, but there's nothing like seeing the guy's face all the time to sell your character to the player.

In essence, remember that, in "video games" there isn't just "games", there's the "video" part - in other words, the "content" part, which includes graphics, music and story. Also, remember that board games often contain elaborate art (for instance, that talisman board game, or the picture on each Magic card). Technically, they could use no art, just text... but less people would play them! The art makes the experience more rich, more intense... you'd be a fool to dismiss it as "unimportant".

QUOTE (Wervyn @ Dec 2 2007, 02:05 AM)
QUOTE (Elig)
Three pages of text in which Elig repeats the same line of reasoning about ten times: Graphics aren't important because if graphics were important they would have to be the only thing important in the game.

Shortened for brevity and sanity. Here's the funny thing, Elig thinks he's an artist but has decided to unilaterally discount that the most prominently understood form of art, visual art, has anything to do with what makes games enjoyable. What everyone else understands is that graphics facilitate visual art, and that visual art IS important to the game experience. It's not that games must be 1080p HD and have light blooms and particle effects to be good games. It's that those things can be used in a meaningful way to affect a game.

Again, Elig's entire post comes down to saying "it's all or nothing guys, you either agree with me and think that graphics are completely pointless and a waste of time, or you're an idiot and you think graphics are the only important things ever." It's his inability to understand the middle ground where most truth falls that makes this post (and his arguments in general) shallow reasoning.

"Less is more."

I love how you have this completely inanely stupid, shallow point of view and insist on defending it.

I mean, it's really stupid. I don't understand how you can possibly be this stupid.

Also, Madbrain, sorry, Super Metroid's graphics weren't some great work of art. That's just fucking crazy.

I really don't think there's anything I can add to this that will make you appear more ridiculous than you already do. I mean, is that an intentional self-parody or what?

"All signs point to maybe."
